Approaches to the ethology of hydroids and medusae (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) OMA
Miglietta, M.P.; Tommasa, L.D.; Denitto, F.; Gravili, C.; Pagliara, P.; Bouillon, J.; Boero, F..
The behavioural patterns of 26 species of Antho- and Leptomedusae (with or without medusa stage) were investigated by video recordings. The analysed activities were: answers to mechanical stimuli, prey capture and ingestion, digestion, egestion, and swimming. The quantity of behavioural patterns identified in the small number of hydrozoan diversity studied so far is sufficient to demonstrate that these supposedly "simple" animals have evolved a complex array of responses to both external and internal stimuli.

Aspects of the biology and feeding ecology of the orbiculate cardinal fish <i>Sphaeramia orbicularis</i> (Cuvier, 1828) (Teleostei: Apogonidae) in a Kenyan mangrove forest OMA
Mees, J.; Mwamsojo, G.U.; Wakwabi, E.O..
The orbiculate cardinal fish <i>Sphaeramia orbicularis</i> is the most abundant teleost among the root system of the extensive mangrove forests bordering Gazi Bay, Kenya. The species was never recorded from the bay proper and it can thus be considered to be a true mangrove resident. The sampled population clearly consisted of two cohorts: the modes were approximately 65mm and 80 mm. Most individuals with standard lengths >40mm had mature gonads ; the number of eggs ranged from 4,700 to 10,000. <i>S. orbicularis</i> are carnivores, mainly feeding on small epi- and hyperbenthic crustaceans. Numerically, gammaridean amphipods and tanaids were the dominant prey categories in the stomachs of both size classes. Individuals belonging to...

Aspects of the life-cycle of <i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (Nematoda; Monhysteridae) OMA
Vranken, G.; Thielemans, L.K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vandycke, M..
<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-to), where to = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). At 25 °C and 30 promille S, average embryonic development time and generation time are 4 and 9 d...

Assessing organic matter mineralization, degradability and mixing rate in an ocean margin sediment (Northeast Atlantic) by diagenetic modeling OMA
Soetaert, K.; Herman, P.M.J.; Middelburg, J.J.; Heip, C.H.R..
We test whether organic matter degradability, mixing activity, and total sediment mineralization can be estimated by inversion of a coupled nonlinear numerical steady-state diagenetic model. We use a single data set comprising oxygen, nitrate, ammonium and organic carbon versus depth profiles from a slope station in the Goban Spur area (1034 m, Northeast Atlantic). Based on an extensive sensitivity analysis, it appears that (1) when using all data, the total mineralization rates can be determined with reasonable precision; bioturbation and degradability are less well constrained and (2) total mineralization rates can be determined based on nitrate and oxygen profiles only; estimates of organic matter mixing rates and degradability are refined when...

Assessment of ammonia toxicity in contaminated sediments in the upper Scheldt (Belgium): the development and application of toxicity identification evaluation procedures OMA
Van Sprang, P.; Janssen, C.R.; Sabayasachi, M.; Benijts, F.; Persoone, G..
The toxicity of sediment pore waters from 4 sites in the Upper Scheldt war characterized using modified Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedures The samples from all locations exhibited acute toxicity to the freshwater crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus. The IIE approach was conducted using an enlarged battery of fractionation tests. Toxicity was removed or reduced significantly by the cation exchange resins and the air-stripping test at pH 11. Additionally, increased toxicity war observed at higher pH while a reduced toxicity war found at a decreased pH. From these TIE studies, ammonia war identified as the dominant toxic agent.

Atmosferische fluxen van zware metalen naar de Noordzee OMA
Otten, P.; Injuk, J.; Rojas, C.; Van Grieken, R..
The North Sea is being under loaded in many ways, both by organic and anorganic pollutants. Transport over rivers is the most evident way. Direct emission along the coastline and dumping of toxic materials by vessels are another two causes of pollution. Exploitation of oil and gas platforms also lead to operational emission of certain noxious substances. “Last but not least” a part of the pollutants also reach the North Sea through the atmosphere. This article specifically concerns the latter facet of North Sea Pollution. Both gaseous and particular material is being emitted in the atmosphere through incineration and other polluting processes. After physical dispersion and chemical transformation, these pollutants can end up in the sea through deposit...

Atmospheric concentrations and deposition of heavy metals over the North Sea: a literature review OMA
Injuk, J.; Van Grieken, R..
A literature review of the atmospheric concentration rates and dry and wet deposition fluxes of particulate Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn to the North Sea and adjacent areas is given. The results of direct measurements of dry and wet deposition fluxes are compared to indirect estimates and to modelling values. This work points out the large uncertainties in results of different studies on atmospheric input of trace elements into the North Sea. The current knowledge about the dependence of the deposition velocity upon the particular size and about the processes controlling wet deposition fluxes, and the quality and completeness of the emission data are still adequate for describing the environmental cycle and impact of heavy metals in the North Sea.

Atmospheric concentrations and size distributions of aircraft-sampled Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn over the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Injuk, J.; Otten, Ph.; Laane, R.W.P.M.; Maenhaut, W.; Van Grieken, R..
In an effort to assess the atmospheric input of heavy metals to the Southern Bight of the North Sea, aircraft-based aerosol samplings in the lower troposphere were performed between September 1988 and October 1989. Total atmospheric particulate and size-differentiated concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined as a function of altitude, wind direction, air-mass history and season. The obtained data are compared with results of ship-based measurements carried out previously and with literature values of Cu, Pb and Zn, for the marine troposphere of the southern North Sea. The results point out the high variability of the concentrations with the meteorological conditions, as well as with time and location. The experimentally found particle size...

Atmospheric particulate element concentrations and deposition rates in French Polynesia OMA
Rojas, C.M.; Injuk, J.; Van Grieken, R.E.; Maenhaut, W..
Over a period of eight months, a total of 26 atmospheric particulate matter samples were collected at the location of Tahiti and in other areas of French Polynesia, using a specially equipped sailboat. A 6-stage cascade impact or was used to separate aerosols in the following size classes: > 4,2-4, 1-2,0.5-1,0.25-0.5 and < 0.25 µm equivalent aerodynamic diameter. The resulting set of 156 size segregated aerosol samples was analyzed by particle-induced X-ray emission for 16 elements. This study deals with the concentrations of Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Sr and Pb. Enrichment factor calculations reveal that Na, Mg, S, A, K, Ca and Sr were little fractionated with respect to bulk sea water, whereas Al, Si, Ti, Mn and Fe...

Automation in stock-culture maintenance and juvenile separation of the mysid <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> (Molenonck) OMA
Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A batch system with subgravel filter for stock-culture maintenance of <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> in artificial sea water is described. The feeding of mysids on <i>Artemia</i> is optimized through the cyclic pumping of brine shrimp instar I nauplii from a refrigerator to the stock-cultures. An easily constructed incubator-separator apparatus is described for the standardized harvesting of mysid juveniles to be used as test organisms.

Availability of reference <i>Artemia</i> cysts OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Biometrical, biochemical and food-value characteristics of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii vary with the source of the cyst material. In order to facilitate intercalibration and/or comparison of research conducted with cysts from different sources, homogenous cyst material can now be obtained from the <i>Artemia</i> Reference Center (State University of Ghent, J. Plateaustraat 22, B-9000 Ghent, Belgium). The reference cysts have been tested extensively for hatching characteristics, biometrics, fatty-acid content, pesticide contamination and effectiveness as larval food for various crustaceans and fishes.

Baker's yeast as a potential substitute for live algae in aquaculture diets: <i>Artemia</i> as a case study OMA
Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
In this study baker's yeast was evaluated as a substitute for live <i>Dunaliella tertiolecta</i> algae in the culture of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> . Consumption of fresh baker's yeast resulted in poor growth and survival of brine shrimp. However, the nutritional value of the yeast significantly improved after complete removal of the yeast cell wall by enzymatic treatment. Baker's yeast was also made digestible for <i>Artemia</i> by simple chemical treatment which did not reduce rigidity of the yeast cell. The external mannoprotein layer of the yeast cell wall is probably the major barrier to digestion by <i>Artemia</i> . Chemically treated baker's yeast offers promising possibilities as a substitute for...

Barite formation in the Southern Ocean water column OMA
Stroobants, N.; Dehairs, F.A.; Goeyens, L.; Vanderheijden, N.; Van Grieken, R..
The intensity of past biological activity can be correlated with the occurrence of suspended and sedimented barite (BaSO4). To date, there is a lack of information on the processes controlling the production of pelagic barite. During the EPOS-2 cruise (November-December 1988), situated in the Scotia Sea-Weddell Sea Confluence, suspended water samples were taken for analysis of total Ba by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and for scanning electron microscopy-electron microprobe (SEM-EMP).The vertical profiles of particulate barium generally show a Ba maximum between 200 and 500 m. SEM-EMP investigation on Scotia-Weddell Sea Confluence profiles provide a possible explanation for the origin of this...

Bedforms on the Middelkerke Bank, southern North Sea OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G..
Large dunes cover the flanks and summit of the Middelkerke Bank. They have constant orientation heights ranging from 0.5 to 5 m, wavelengths of 75 to 150 m and in most cases asymmetrical profiles. No relationships could be established between the heights of the large dunes and the grain sizes of the sediment or the water depth in which they are developed. The slopes of both lee and stoss flanks are very low. Almost every large dune on the bank can assume both ebb and flood orientations through time. Two cases are presented in which particular swell and wind conditions induced common orientations to nearly all the large dunes. No significant migration was observed for six large dunes on the northern end of the bank over a time span of 13 moths during which...
